Free-Space Laser Communication Specialist UAV (Applications) (f/m/d)
We are looking for a Free-Space Laser Communication Specialist with strong system engineering and project management experience. In this role, you will focus on enabling high-speed free-space optical links for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms, where performance, reliability, and robustness against environmental factors are of critical importance.
What You'll Do
- Define system requirements and architectures for UAV-based free-space optical communication links.
- Lead trade studies, system-level analyses, and design reviews.
- Perform research work with simulations, measurements, literature research; calculate link budgets including atmospheric effects; research new technical approaches.
- Take an active role in project and product management, leading projects but also being part of the project team; manage development milestones, from early prototypes to flight-ready subsystems.
- Coordinate efforts across optical, electrical, mechanical, and UAV engineering teams.
- ·Support building, integrating, and testing optical communication prototypes in the lab and in the field.
What You Bring
- Education: Master’s or PhD in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
- Experience:
- At least 5-10 years of experience in free-space optical communications or related optical system development.
- In-depth understanding of laser communication theory, modulation, coding, and link budgets, atmospheric effects, pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) systems, etc.
- Demonstrated skills in leading projects.
- Excellent English communication skills, working level of German would be desirable.
